The Youngest Mountain Man

This is a book I feel everyone in 4th and 5th grade should definitely read because it tells exactly what happened the way it happened & it’s historically accurate.--Jack Davis, Mobil Museum Presenter, Washington county Historical Society, Portland Community College

“Being an old Buckskinner myself, once I picked
up the book I could not put it down. The author, Kelley, has rekindled my dreams of the Mountain men of the past.-- Ed "Tall Bear" Cooper

Gary,
There is a waiting list to read your book. Every student that has read it has really loved it. Wish you could hear them talk about it. One boy, who tries not to read anything, ate it up and wrote a summary on it. Nancy really liked it because she likes to read those stories. They want to check out my copy, but I've been stingy with it. Just wanted you to know it is a very popular book in our library!

As a homeschooling Mom I appreciate anything that helps history come alive for my boys. This book paints a vivid picture of this time in history in a way that's very appealing to my boys. I know it's one we'll read again and again.

The Youngest Mountain Man
Jacob Thompson is the only survivor when Indians kill his parents and take his little sister. Two mountain men rescue him and teach him the skills needed to survive in the mountains.
Author- Gary Kelley

Along the way Jacob learns to trap, start fire with flint and steel, shoot a buffalo rifle and fight a grizzly bear. He soon learns that he’s a crack shot, better than his teachers. Can he use his new-found skill to save little Hannah from the Indians.

It’s a boys’ book full of adventure, danger, and courage set in the Fur Trade era of the Rocky Mountains.

Skunk Catcher
The skunk looked at Kevin, unafraid. White slobber dribbled from its chin whiskers. It had the same vacant look as the rabid skunk in the park.
“You’re the one,” Kevin said. “Now what do I do?”

Thirteen-year-old Kevin Barton would much rather hunt and trap in the wilderness than be stuck inside a classroom in Beaverton, Oregon. Big for his age, clumsy, and out of touch with the other kids, Kevin dreams of being in Alaska with his dad.

But Mom never talks about Dad, or why she hates Grandpa, and it costs money to fly to Alaska. The closest Kevin ever gets to wilderness life is when Grandpa John teaches him to read animal sign during summer campouts.

When Kevin earns enough money to buy a “live” trap to catch animals in the woods near school, he gets a new outlook on life. Then a dangerous, rabid skunk is discovered roaming the area, and a cash reward is offered for its capture. Suddenly, Kevin realizes there is a chance to go to Alaska. All he has to do is catch that skunk!
